Letter from the Vice-Chairman

Dear OWASP Community, 

Preparation for next year's conferences is underway. I had the pleasure of meeting people from our community at a recent ISACA Ireland event where I had an OWASP stand. I also had lots of swag to give away, loads left which I plan to share out amongst the community. 

I was on a call recently with both WIA leadership and a number of individuals looking to broaden our diversity reach, forming DIA (diversity in AppSec). This was a positive call and I look forward to reviewing their proposal under the committee 2.0 operating model.

I'd like to thank our volunteers, chapter and project leaders for making OWASP what it is today. We wouldn't have a foundation without you. We always want to make things better, to this end, it would be great if you could fill out the following feedback form.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR


As we wind down 2019, we are planning lots of new opportunities to get involved with OWASP next year. The current working draft of the 2020 Operating Plan can be found on our staging site for our new website which is planned to launch next month.
 
Some of the highlights for 2020:
  • Quarterly Town Hall meetings.
  • Two Project Summits - the first in February 2020
  • Pilot single-day AppSec Days worldwide to offer local training and community.
We are also set to further increase the transparency of the daily workings of OWASP through our Staff Projects page. The pages linked there will always be a work in progress; some of which today are still only templates but still a great resource to know what's going on at OWASP.

All of this which adds to our Global and Regional Events, ongoing local chapter support, and other member activities. Our plans are ambitious and we look forward to your continued support this and every month as we look to better secure the web.

Projects must apply and then get selected to participate. The application process will require project meeting goals, work plans, key contributors, and expected attendance. Conference Program Teams are constituted for each Global AppSec event and consists of members of OWASP members and staff. The selection of team members is based on subject-matter expertise and a balanced representation of the OWASP community. For planning purposes, team members shall reside on the continent of the Global AppSec for which they serve. Teams are constituted no later than six months prior to the Global AppSec event.

We are so excited to announce that both the London OWASP and WIA community have been asked to speak at BlackHat Europe 2019 on Wednesday 4 December at the EXCEL London.   Andra Lezza is leading the panel of women to "Share insights gained at different stages of their careers to help other women in the field."  Thank you, Andra, for leading the initiative and also to Sonya Moisset, Bibi Sanjarani, Katy Anton and Lauren Chiesa for volunteering to be part of the panel.  Also from the OWASP Community and a London Chapter Leader Sam Stepanyan and Paul Harragan.  Sam and Pau will be presenting a more in-depth demo on the OWASP Nettacker.  Good luck to all the speakers have a great conference.

PROJECTS


As the foundation moves toward the migration of the OWASP web presence from the old wiki site to our new Github-hosted home, some of you may still have questions regarding what to move and how to move it. Essentially, if you have a chapter page or project page and you have not migrated it to the new website, that would be first. Steps on what to do and what is needed can be found at https://www2.owasp.org/migration There are also some minor instructions on the default project or chapter page itself. And if you are wondering where that page is located, you can go to https://github.com/OWASP and type your chapter name in the repository search bar. If your project or chapter is not there, contact me. Lastly, there are a number of excellent examples already done by other leaders (also linked on the migration page).

And, as a precaution, you should click over into the 'Settings' of your repository and then click the 'Collaborators & teams' link on the left menu and check to make sure that the usernames added to Collaborators match what you expect.  Having someone you do not know edit your web page without your knowledge is no longer the expected behavior.

Some resources, mostly for projects, have been uploaded to the OWASP Site Theme Repository and can be linked to via the /assets/image/common/<file> URL.

After your chapter or project page is done, there is a www-community repository which would include any files from the wiki that are not currently in a project or chapter or board/staff policy area.  For instance, there are pages there for GSoC and XSS and CSRF.  A list of the top pages that need to be migrated can be found attached to one of the TODO cards on our website migration Trello board which you are invited to join if you want to help migrate loose pages and/or perform some automation work.

Our current plan can be found on the Website Relaunch project page.

PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT

As part of OWASP's participation in Google's Season of Docs, the ZAP project has had Nirojan Selvanathan (@sshniro)  working on API documentation.  The first iteration of the documentation is now live.  It includes Java, Python, and shell
example snippets all presented in a responsive and accessible design which we will continue to build on in the future.

Big thanks to Nirojan for his efforts on this wonderful initiative!

SubOver - A Powerful Subdomain Takeover Tool


Subover is a Hostile Subdomain Takeover tool designed in Python. From start, it has been aimed with speed and efficiency in mind. Till date, SubOver detects 36 services which is much more than any other tool out there. The tool is multithreaded and hence delivers good speed. It can easily detect and report potential subdomain takeovers that exist. The list of potentially hijackable services is very comprehensive and it is what makes this tool so powerful.

Installing
You need to have Python 2.7 installed on your machine. The following additional requirements are required -
  • dnspython
  • colorama

Usage
python subover.py -l subdomains.txt -o output_takeovers.txt
  • -l subdomains.txt is the list of target subdomains. These can be discovered using various tool such as sublist3r or others.
  • -o output_takeovers.txtis the name of the output file. (Optional & Currently not very well formatted)
  • -t 20 is the default number of threads that SubOver will use. (Optional)
  • -V is the switch for showing verbose output. (Optional, Default=False)

OWASP ZAP Project - Zed Attack Proxy Team Releases Two Initiatives

The Zed Attack Proxy team is pleased to announce two recently released initiatives:


ZAP In Ten

The team have just launched a new series of videos called 'ZAP in Ten' in conjunction with AllDayDevOps.

ZAP in Ten is a series of short form videos featuring Simon Bennetts, project lead of the OWASP Zed Attack Proxy (ZAP)  project. Each video highlights a specific feature or resource for ZAP.

S2 Dynamic Tracer And Decompiler For Gdb

Decompiling is very useful for understanding srtipped binaries, most dissasemblers like IDA or Hopper have a plugin for decompiling binaries, generating a c like pseudocode.

Static analysis, is very useful in most of cases, specially when the binary is not so big, or when you just have an address where to start to analyze. But some algorithms will be learned in less time by dynamic analysis like tracing or debugging.

In cookiemonsters team, we are working on several tracers with different focus, but all of them mix the concept of tracing and decompiling to generate human-readable traces.

S2 is my tracer & decompiler plugin for gdb, very useful for ctfs.

How To Start | How To Become An Ethical Hacker

Are you tired of reading endless news stories about ethical hacking and not really knowing what that means? Let's change that!

OK, let's dive into the post and suggest some ways that you can get ahead in Cybersecurity.
I receive many messages on how to become a hacker. "I'm a beginner in hacking, how should I start?" or "I want to be able to hack my friend's Facebook account" are some of the more frequent queries. Hacking is a skill. And you must remember that if you want to learn hacking solely for the fun of hacking into your friend's Facebook account or email, things will not work out for you. You should decide to learn hacking because of your fascination for technology and your desire to be an expert in computer systems. Its time to change the color of your hat 😀

 I've had my good share of Hats. Black, white or sometimes a blackish shade of grey. The darker it gets, the more fun you have.

If you have no experience don't worry. We ALL had to start somewhere, and we ALL needed help to get where we are today. No one is an island and no one is born with all the necessary skills. Period.OK, so you have zero experience and limited skills…my advice in this instance is that you teach yourself some absolute fundamentals.

Hacker gets unauthorized access by targeting system while ethical hacker have an official permission in a lawful and legitimate manner to assess the security posture of a target system(s)

Black hat — classical hacker, get unauthorized access.

What is Bug Bounty ?



A bug bounty program, also called a vulnerability rewards program (VRP), is a crowdsourcing initiative that rewards individuals for discovering and reporting software bugs. Bug bounty programs are often initiated to supplement internal code audits and penetration tests as part of an organization's vulnerability management strategy.




Many software vendors and websites run bug bounty programs, paying out cash rewards to software security researchers and white hat hackers who report software vulnerabilities that have the potential to be exploited. Bug reports must document enough information for for the organization offering the bounty to be able to reproduce the vulnerability. Typically, payment amounts are commensurate with the size of the organization, the difficulty in hacking the system and how much impact on users a bug might have.


Mozilla paid out a $3,000 flat rate bounty for bugs that fit its criteria, while Facebook has given out as much as $20,000 for a single bug report. Google paid Chrome operating system bug reporters a combined $700,000 in 2012 and Microsoft paid UK researcher James Forshaw $100,000 for an attack vulnerability in Windows 8.1.  In 2016, Apple announced rewards that max out at $200,000 for a flaw in the iOS secure boot firmware components and up to $50,000 for execution of arbitrary code with kernel privileges or unauthorized iCloud access.


While the use of ethical hackers to find bugs can be very effective, such programs can also be controversial. To limit potential risk, some organizations are offering closed bug bounty programs that require an invitation. Apple, for example, has limited bug bounty participation to few dozen researchers.

Testing SAML Endpoints For XML Signature Wrapping Vulnerabilities

A lot can go wrong when validating SAML messages. When auditing SAML endpoints, it's important to look out for vulnerabilities in the signature validation logic. XML Signature Wrapping (XSW) against SAML is an attack where manipulated SAML message is submitted in an attempt to make the endpoint validate the signed parts of the message -- which were correctly validated -- while processing a different attacker-generated part of the message as a way to extract the authentication statements. Because the attacker can arbitrarily forge SAML assertions which are accepted as valid by the vulnerable endpoint, the impact can be severe. [1,2,3]

Testing for XSW vulnerabilities in SAML endpoints can be a tedious process, as the auditor needs to not only know the details of the various XSW techniques, but also must handle a multitude of repetitive copy-and-paste tasks and apply the appropriate encoding onto each message. The latest revision of the XSW-Attacker module in our BurpSuite extension EsPReSSo helps to make this testing process easier, and even comes with a semi-automated mode. Read on to learn more about the new release! 

 SAML XSW-Attacker

After a signed SAML message has been intercepted using the Burp Proxy and shown in EsPReSSO, you can open the XSW-Attacker by navigating to the SAML tab and then the Attacker tab.  Select Signature Wrapping from the drop down menu, as shown in the screenshot below:



To simplify its use, the XSW-Attacker performs the attack in a two step process of initialization and execution, as reflected by its two tabs Init Attack and Execute Attack. The interface of the XSW-Attacker is depicted below.

The Init Attack tab displays the current SAML message. To execute a signature wrapping attack, a payload needs to be configured in a way that values of the originally signed message are replaced with values of the attacker's choice. To do this, enter the value of a text-node you wish to replace in the Current value text-field. Insert the replacement value in the text-field labeled New value and click the Add button. Multiple values can be provided; however, all of which must be child nodes of the signed element. Valid substitution pairs and the corresponding XPath selectors are displayed in the Modifications Table. To delete an entry from the table, select the entry and press `Del`, or use the right-click menu.

Next, click the Generate vectors button - this will prepare the payloads accordingly and brings the Execute Attack tab to the front of the screen.

At the top of the Execute Attack tab, select one of the pre-generated payloads. The structure of the selected vector is explained in a shorthand syntax in the text area below the selector.
The text-area labeled Attack vector is editable and can be used to manually fine-tune the chosen payload if necessary. The button Pretty print opens up a syntax-highlighted overview of the current vector.
To submit the manipulated SAML response, use Burp's Forward button (or Go, while in the Repeater).

Automating XSW-Attacker with Burp Intruder

Burp's Intruder tool allows the sending of automated requests with varying payloads to a test target and analyzes the responses. EsPReSSO now includes a Payload Generator called XSW Payloads to facilitate when testing the XML processing endpoints for XSW vulnerabilities. The following paragraphs explain how to use the automated XSW attacker with a SAML response.

First, open an intercepted request in Burp's Intruder (e.g., by pressing `Ctrl+i`). For the attack type, select Sniper. Open the Intruder's Positions tab, clear all payload positions but the value of the XML message (the `SAMLResponse` parameter, in our example). Note: the XSW-Attacker can only handle XML messages that contain exactly one XML Signature.
Next, switch to the Payloads tab and for the Payload Type, select Extension-generated. From the newly added Select generator drop-down menu, choose XSW Payloads, as depicted in the screenshot below.



While still in the Payloads tab, disable the URL-encoding checkbox in the Payload Encoding section, since Burp Intruder deals with the encoding automatically and should suffice for most cases.
Click the Start Attack button and a new window will pop up. This window is shown below and is similar to the XSW Attacker's Init Attack tab.


Configure the payload as explained in the section above. In addition, a schema analyzer can be selected and checkboxes at the bottom of the window allow the tester to choose a specific encoding. However, for most cases the detected presets should be correct.

Click the Start Attack button and the Intruder will start sending each of the pre-generated vectors to the configured endpoint. Note that this may result in a huge number of outgoing requests. To make it easier to recognize the successful Signature Wrapping attacks, it is recommended to use the Intruder's Grep-Match functionality. As an example, consider adding the replacement values from the Modifications Table as a Grep-Match rule in the Intruder's Options tab. By doing so, a successful attack vector will be marked with a checkmark in the results table, if the response includes any of the configure grep rules.
